Sacramento City Council Members are elected to serve four (4) year terms. There are no limits to the number of terms a person may serve. The term expirations for the City Council are staggered so that only half of the offices expire at a time. The terms for Mayor and Council Members of Districts 2, 4, 6 and 8 expire in 2012, and terms for Members of Districts 1, 3, 5 and 7 expire in 2010.

If you are interested in running for public office in the City of Sacramento, you must meet the following requirements:
Issuance of nomination documents for municipal offices are done on an appointment basis through the City Clerk's Office. To assist candidates in successfully navigating the regulations and forms, the City Clerk will provide an instructional overview at the time nomination documents are issued. This process can take from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the number of questions asked by the candidate. Nomination forms are issued at no charge.
To ensure that the City Clerk's elections team is prepared to devote their full attention to each candidate, an appointment is highly encouraged. Office hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., closed on State recognized holidays. To schedule an appointment, call the City Clerk's Office at 808-7200. A candidate should be prepared to provide a name and residential address for validation of current voter registration and eligibility status.
During the nomination period, each candidate shall secure (upon their nomination petition) not less than twenty (20), nor more than thirty (30) signatures of registered voters residing within the City of Sacramento council district in which they reside (Mayor citywide).
All nomination documents must be completed and submitted to the Office of the City Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on the closing date of the nomination period. Other required and/or optional documents include (but are not limited to) a:
