Building Inspections

All construction work for which a permit is required shall be inspected and remain accessible and exposed for inspection until approved by the inspector. To determine if a proposed project within the City limits requires a permit please Contact CDD, or visit the Permit Counter.

The permit must be on site at all times throughout the construction/modification phase. A set if City-approved plans (stamped “APPROVED”) are required to be on site for each inspection.

Scheduling an inspection

It is the property owner's responsibility to make sure that all required inspections are made on a project, including both in-progress inspections and the final inspection. The contractor, however, may schedule the inspections and be the one on-site for each one.

Inspection requests can be made 24 hours a day. Requests made before 4:00 p.m. will be scheduled for the following work day. Requests made after 4:00 p.m. and on weekends or holidays will be scheduled two working days later.

Re-inspections & Correction Notices

If permit work does not pass inspection the first time, a re-inspection is necessary. The applicant receives a correction notice from the inspector, listing the items that need to be fixed before the work can pass inspection, as well as any new items that may need to be added. For example, the applicant schedules an inspection of a water heater replacement. When the inspector comes out, he finds a problem with how the water heater is strapped down, as well as some electrical work that did not appear on the original permit. The inspector would give the applicant a correction notice listing these problems. The applicant would then have to make the required changes, then come to the Permit Counter to change the scope of the permit to include the electrical work. Also due at this time is the $75 re-inspection fee, as well as the new charges for the new scope of the permit.
