Planning Academy

What is the Planning Academy?

The Planning Academy is a ten-week course designed to educate and engage citizens in the City’s planning process.  As part of the City’s Smart Growth Implementation Strategy, the objective is to assist participants in becoming more effective and informed advocates for Smart Growth in future City of Sacramento planning efforts.

Sessions are designed to include discussion, presentations, Q&A, interactive group exercises, and field trips. Presenters/speakers include City staff , local architects and planning professionals, elected officials, and building industry leaders.

Classes cover a broad spectrum of planning topics and issues, including:

  • An overview of planning in Sacramento
  • Review of development projects
  • The City’s 2030 General Plan
  • Smart Growth and the regional context
  • Affordable housing and infill development
  • The transportation–land use connection
  • Sustainability, health, and livability
  • Economic development

The Planning Academy will give students the tools needed to:

  • Identify the regional benefits and impacts associated with Smart Growth versus urban sprawl
  • Identify elements of successful development projects
  • Participate in future City of Sacramento planning efforts
  • Educate other community members about Smart Growth and about supporting Smart Growth development proposals

When is the Next Planning Academy Session?

Due to budget constraints, future Planning Academy courses have been cancelled indefinitely. Please check back for information about future Planning Academy sessions. It is not known when the next session will be held.

Each class will be limited to approximately 25 participants. The Long-Range Planning Division will make applications available prior to the beginning of the next session. Participants should be willing to devote ten weekday evenings and two Saturday mornings over a period of ten weeks. Participants who finish the ten-week course will participate in a graduate reception with the City Council and the Mayor.
