What is GIS?
- A system of software, hardware, data, and personnel that are used to manipulate, analyze, and present information tied to a spatial location
- It combines layers of information about a place to give a better understanding of a location
- Often referred to as a "mapping tool"
- Generates maps based upon the collected data
- The possibilities are endless with GIS as it is flexible enough to map anything as long as the data is available
How is GIS incorporated into Development Services?
GIS is used for a variety of record keeping and document production within Development Services. In addition, the real power of GIS is its ability to analyze patterns and trends among the different layers of information that Development Services generates and maintains. Some examples include, but are not limited to:
- Building Permits
- Historic Properties and Neighborhoods
- Zoning
- Special Fee Districts
- Endangered Species Locations
- Mapping of the General Plan, Community Plan, and Specific Site Plans
