Services Provided

Services provided include maintenance and repair of City vehicles and equipment such as sedans, light and heavy duty trucks, trailers, tractors and miscellaneous equipment that use fuels, have wheels and tires, and/or are operated or used on public streets. Fleet provides asset management and budgeting for replacement vehicles and equipment, specification development, and fuel and energy management. Specifications for replacement and additional vehicles and equipment are developed with customer involvement to provide the most effective "tools" for their operations.

Vehicle and equipment users are charged established rental rates that are based on historical costs of operation, usually on a per mile or per hour basis. The rates generally remain constant through the budget period and overall costs to the using department change based on operator-controlled usage. All costs of operation, insurance, fuel, maintenance, and replacement or depreciation are included in a single rate simplifying the budget process of the using departments. Each fiscal year, Fleet provides an estimated budget for each operating unit of the City that is based on the history of the unit and any needed rate adjustments. Fleet customers are assured that the vehicles and equipment used in their operations will be repaired and replaced in a timely manner and fuel will be available, leaving them free to meet their missions.

Fleet provides motor pools at City Hall and the Corporation Yard on 24th Street for occasional use vehicles and equipment, special equipment, and locating and renting from outside sources, for both short- and long-term usage.

During emergencies, Fleet supports the City by locating, arranging for, and coordinating transportation as needed by all City departments and other agencies represented in the Emergency Operations Center, as well as being responsible for energy supply and auxiliary sources of power and coordination with the utility companies due to energy outages for the City as a whole.

Fleet relies on the Administrative Support section of the division for clerical, personnel, accounting, fuel, and oil ordering and tracking, and administrative analyst support for special projects and reports.
