Certified Pre-Owned Cats Available At $0 Down

(Sacramento, CA) -- They come in all certified pre-owned makes and models, they're made in California, they come with a multi-point inspection and, for a limited time, they're available at $0 down, 0% financing and no payments – though donations are gladly accepted.

Believe it or not, we're talking about cats.

Through the Certified Pre-Owned Cat promotion, adoption fees on cats - age one-year and older - are being waived through September 30 for approved adopters at the Sacramento SPCA, City of Sacramento Animal Care Services and Sacramento County Animal Care & Regulation as part of an effort to find adoptive homes for hundreds of cats.

The promotion was designed to bring to light the hundreds of cats currently awaiting adoption in Sacramento animal shelters. Area shelters are inundated with cats, especially this time of year. Sacramento-area animal shelters cared for more than 20,000 homeless cats in 2008 - a staggering number that looks to be on the rise for 2009.

"We're caring for more cats than ever before," said Rick Johnson, Sacramento SPCA Executive Director. "We're hoping this unique promotion will draw attention to the wonderful adult cats available through local shelters, while making people aware of all of the benefits that come with every animal adopted from any Sacramento animal shelter."

Four Sacramento Agencies Come Together for Innovative
"Donate What You Can" Adoption Event

(Sacramento, CA) - Animal shelters across the country are caring for homeless cats in record numbers - especially this time of year - and shelters in the Sacramento region are no exception.

To address this overwhelming issue, four Sacramento animal organizations are coming together to form a unique community-wide collaboration with the simple, but challenging, goal of placing adult cats in permanent homes while being sensitive to the difficult economic times facing all of us.

The Sacramento SPCA, City of Sacramento Animal Care Services, Sacramento County Animal Care & Regulation and Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary are partnering to offer a "Donate What You Can" cat adoption special throughout the month of August. Throughout the event, adoption fees will be waived and persons interested in adopting a cat one year of age or older will be asked to donate whatever they can toward the adoption.

Costs can add up to more than $300 per cat for care and treatment during their stay at the shelters. This cost of care is not recouped even at the shelters' regular, low adoption prices. The "Donate What You Can" event is truly a coordinated effort to find good homes for as many adult cats as possible, despite a potentially significant loss in revenue for the organizations.

Let Your Heart Go A-Stray for Valentine's Day
City Animal Shelter's 1/2 Off Adoption Fee Special for the Week of February 10-14

The City of Sacramento Animal Care Services encourages residents to let your heart go a-stray on Valentine's Day and open it to an animal in need. Give the gift of friendship by adopting a dog or cat from your local shelter. You just might be their last chance to find the love and warmth of a home where they can live out their years in comfort.

The time is now to adopt a furry friend - from February 10-14, the City's pet adoption fees are half off! $42.50 for dogs (normally $85) and $32.50 for cats (regularly $65). This fee includes alterations (spay/neuter), heartworm disease testing, vaccinations (DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies), a one-year City of Sacramento animal license, microchip identifications, a collar and leash - up to a $300 value!

Adopting shelter animals directly helps reduce the suffering caused by pet overpopulation and unnecessary euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals. Prior to adopting a pet, please consider the life-long commitment, time and money that a pet requires.

To learn more about adopting an animal, spaying and neutering, please visit the City's Animal Care Services Center at 2127 Front Street, call (916) 808-PETS (7387) or log on to www.SacPetSearch.com

City Unveils New State of the Art Cat Housing Facility - the Cattery

WHO:

City of Sacramento Councilmembers will join Animal Care Services staff, volunteers and representatives of animal-related organizations to celebrate the grand opening of the animal shelter expansion project, the Cattery.

WHEN:

Saturday, January 31, 2009
9 a.m.

WHERE:

Animal Care Services - 2127 Front Street, Sacramento
Front Street & Broadway

WHAT:

This 2,900 square foot state of the art cat facility will help house the growing
Sacramento cat population. This expansion project constructed at the current animal shelter on Front Street, is one of a kind and a first in Northern California. The facility features custom cat caging, beautiful cat and safari-inspired public art work, animal observation rooms with unique murals as well as areas for public interaction, education and training.

The original animal shelter was built in the early 1990's and is now overcrowded due to the rise in the Sacramento cat population. Approximately 5,200 cats are admitted to the shelter yearly, compared to 3,800 cats admitted in 1997. The new Cattery will allow the shelter to care for more cats and provide additional opportunities for adoption.

To learn more about adopting an animal, please visit the City's Animal Care Services Center at 2127 Front Street, call (916) 808-PETS (7387) or log onto www.SacPetSearch.com.

The media are invited to attend and cover this event. City Councilmembers and Interim Animal Care Services Manager, Reina Schwartz, will be available for interviews after the ribbon- cutting ceremony. Shelter animals, City staff and volunteers, as well as members of several animal-related organizations will be on site.
