What is Planning Academy?

The Fall 2008 Planning Academy is a ten-week course designed to educate and engage citizens in the City’s planning process.  As part of the City’s Smart Growth Implementation Strategy, the objective is to assist participants in becoming more effective and informed advocates for smart growth in future City of Sacramento planning efforts.

Sessions are designed to include discussion, presentations, Q&A, interactive group exercises, and field trips. Presenters/speakers include City staff , local architects and planning professionals, elected officials, and building industry leaders.

Classes cover a broad spectrum of planning topics and issues, including:

  • An overview of planning in Sacramento
  • How development projects are reviewed
  • The City’s 2030 General Plan Update
  • Smart growth and the regional context
  • Affordable housing and infill development
  • The transportation–land use connection
  • Sustainability, health, and livability
  • Economic development

The Planning Academy will give students the tools needed to:

  • Identify the regional benefits and impacts associated with urban sprawl versus smart growth
  • Identify elements of successful development projects
  • Participate in future City of Sacramento planning efforts
  • Educate other community members about smart growth and how they can support smart development proposals
